Mentored Patient-Oriented Research Career Development Award (K23)

The provides support for young investigators to focus their endeavors on patient-oriented research under the guidance of a mentor or mentors. The awards are for 5 years and provide $75,000 in salary per year plus fringe benefits, an allowance of $25,000 per year for research expenses including tuition, supplies, equipment, technical personnel, and reimbursement for human subjects and/or travel to scientific meetings. The awardees must spend at least 75% or more time and effort in patient-oriented research or research-related activities. For specific program information, please see the NIH announcement PA-00-004 at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PA-00-004.html or contact the GCRC for a copy.

Applicants may not be former principal investigators of RO1, R29, POI or P50 projects, but may be former principal investigators of RO3 or R21 projects. K23 award recipients are strongly encouraged to apply for independent research support during the latter period of the award. The GCRC at Harbor suggests that any potential K23 applicant contact Christina Wang, M.D. if they plan to do patient oriented research that may use GCRC resources. The GCRC provides skilled and trained research nurses within their inpatient and outpatient facilities and perinatal clinical research center, bionutrition research services, core laboratory tests and processes, and informatics assistance. If a K23 applicant plans to use GCRC resources for patient-oriented research, the applicant may wish to submit the application to the appropriate institution or to NCRR. The K23 will be awarded to the applicant and not to the GCRC. The advantages of applying through the GCRC are:

The GCRC at Harbor through the GCRC Advisory Committee provides experienced clinical investigators as reviewers for the K23 application. The program directors of the GCRC guide applicants through the grant writing process and are available to provide scientific input. Once the K23 is funded, the GCRC program directors may serve as mentors and advocates outside the applicant’s department and division.

If an applicant chooses not to submit the grant application to NCRR, but still wishes to use the GCRC, he/she should contact Dr. Wang to discuss requesting secondary assignment to NCRR.

The grant deadline for this award is February 1, June 1 and October 1 of each year. If the applicant chooses to submit the K23 with the assistance of the GCRC, the following timetable has been established for the next deadline:

1. Receipt by July 20 of a “Letter of Intent” and biographical sketch from the potential K23 applicants. This one to two-page letter should include the title of the research project to be performed, a brief description of the project, and what the K23 applicant hopes to achieve with the award. The specific clinical studies to be performed on the Clinical Study Center or the Perinatal Research Facility must be noted. This description need not include extensive background, complete references, or a detailed research protocol, but it must be complete enough to allow review by the GCRC Advisory Committee and selection of the final Candidates. Please attach a Biographical Sketch with “Letter of Intent.”

2. Candidates will be asked to present their projects at the Advisory Committee Meeting on August 21 between 12 noon and 2:30 p.m.

3. Completion by September 1 of the final application which requires a much more detailed description of the research plan, GCRC resources requested, and laboratory or other skills to be acquired.

This program provides unique support for young clinical investigators whose research efforts can be divided between clinical and laboratory research according to the nature of the project and/or the background of the applicants. Dr. Wang is happy to meet with potential K23 applicants, to answer any questions, and/or assist in the preparation of the “Letter of Intent” as well as the final application. She can be reached at (310) 222-2503.
