| Description |
The bionutrition core provides clinical nutrition services to all patients in the GCRC’s inpatient and outpatient facilities who are participating in studies requiring special nutrition control or assessment. Research diets are developed and prepared by a specially trained staff of nutritional research specialists in the metabolic kitchen. Training in nutrition research methodology is available to research fellows and other students.

- Lange and Holtain calipers for skinfold thickness, elbow breadth calipers to measure frame size
- Jamar hand grip dynamometer to measure grip strength
- Bioelectric impedance monitor (RJL Systems) to measure body composition
- Abdominal calipers to measure abdominal sagittal diameter
- Vmax indirect calorimeter to measure energy expenditure
- Nutrient analysis software (Minnesota Nutrition Data System, and Nutritionist V)
Services Available to Investigators Conducting Research
- Consult with investigators in the planning and development of research protocols
- Design, prepare and distribute research diets (from regular meals to complex metabolic balance diets)
- Collect, analyze and maintain database for nutrition research data
- Perform body composition assessments (anthropometry, bioelectric impedance analysis)
- Assess dietary intake (3,4 and 7 day food record, food frequency questionnaires, 24 hour recalls)
- Perform Subjective Global Assessment to determine nutritional status
Staffing
- The bionutrition core unit is managed by a Ph.D. level dietitian, and is staffed by a full time lead diet technician with 25 years research experience, 2 full time diet clerks , 2 research nutritionists and 2 part time diet technicians.
